Charges laid in 2021 death of Regina inmate

A Moose Jaw man has been charged in relation to the 2021 death of a male inmate at the Regina Correctional Centre, says the Saskatchewan RCMP.

In February of 2021, RCMP and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service began investigating after a 38-year-old inmate went into medical distress in an admissions-area holding cell and was declared deceased later that day.

Investigators determined another man “provided cocaine to the deceased prior to him going into medical distress,” the RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

After further investigation and consultation with Crown prosecutors, the 42-year-old Moose Jaw man was charged with manslaughter and trafficking cocaine in relation to the death, police said.

The accused appeared in Regina provincial court on Monday.

The name of the deceased has not been shared publicly and next of kin were notified at the time of his death. The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety also opened an internal investigation into the incident when it occurred in 2021.
