LaSalle dog adoption event promotes rescue pet awareness

Dogs in need of loving homes wagged their way into hearts Saturday during an adoption event in LaSalle for rescue animals.

Visitors at the Hungry Pooch had a chance to meet and bond with five rescue dogs up for adoption by Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) of Windsor-Essex County.

“We just want people to come meet the dogs,” said organizer Deborah Anderson. “If they fall in love with a dog, there are applications they can fill out. Our goal is to hopefully get at least one good application for the event, but sometimes it doesn’t work out.”

SCAR is a non-profit that rescues dogs at risk of euthanasia in kill shelters, particularly in Texas, as well as dogs from puppy mills across Ontario.

“Texas has high kill shelters and they have a lot of dogs that are just dumped,” Anderson told the Star. “They’re sad, they’re starving, and they’re abused. We work with a whole bunch of rescue groups all across Canada and the United States for these animals.”

Saturday’s event not only sought to find families for the dogs but also served as an opportunity to raise awareness about SCAR’s mission and increase their visibility in the community.

The organization rescues dozens of dogs each year, with a team a volunteers who foster them until they are ready to be placed in their permanent homes.

“There’s so many dogs out there that end up in a bad situation,” store manager Tera Deschamps said. “Sometimes families can’t provide the proper care for a dog anymore and it doesn’t work out for them.

“It’s great to give those dogs an opportunity to find a forever home.”

The five dogs available for adoption ranged in age, size, and personality.  While some were playful and energetic, others were quite calm and laid-back.
